Dear Members of the St James Catholic College Community,
This Term, our College community has celebrated the Feast of Saint James and the Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
Last Thursday, Primary students from both St James Catholic College and Sacred Heart Catholic School gathered together at Sacred Heart Geeveston to celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary MacKillop. This day commenced with a Mass led by Father Howard. Following this, students combined into classes to complete a wide range of activities including going on bush walks, riding bikes, making crafts, playing sport and completing STEM challenges. The day was an overall success which was enjoyed by both staff and students. A special thank you to Mr Luch Brighella and all the wonderful staff and students from Sacred Heart for making this day so great.
Marty Ogle (the Tasmanian Catholic Education Officer for Catholic Identity & Values Education) has been working again with both our students and staff in further developing our relationship with each other and with Jesus. Marty has written a series of “MJR” books which ties in scripture to everyday actions and deeds. This program is supported and implemented by our College across a number of year levels. Marty uses the acronym WEST to encourage all of us to be Welcoming, Encouraging, to say Sorry and to say Thank You. Marty was impressed by the openness and willingness of our students to participate in his sessions. Marty will be returning to work with our students later in the term and in his role continue to spread the Good News.
Leanne Pritchard (Tasmanian Catholic Education Officer for Catholic Identity and Evangelisation Officer) has this week been working with our students to explain and explore the different elements of Mass. I was fortunate to participate with a group of Year 7’s who very respectfully listened and asked Leane questions as she explained what happens during Mass.
St James Catholic College welcomes students from different faiths and backgrounds. Through a range of activities, we offer an invitation to our students to further develop in their own faith journeys. I encourage you to spend some time talking with your child about some of these activities. All such things call us to have stronger relationships with both others and our God.
God Bless,
Allan Clark Principal

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
On Wednesday 1 August 2019, a group of SJCC students had the pleasure of attending the Women in Technology forum at the University of Tasmania. Twelve of our rising star female students from 8 Gold attended this event. The students were able to hear about the individual and exciting career paths of some women in STEM fields and learned about the upcoming areas of technology that were considered growth areas for the future career market. The students also had some hands-on fun operating and experiencing Virtual Reality applications, operating drones by themselves and seeing how 3D printers and other hardware operated. The girls were an absolute pleasure to take on this excursion. They were interested, involved and represented our school beautifully. Congratulations girls.

Government House
As part of National Science Week Thomas Reed, Callum Robbie and Mrs Schnitzerling were invited to attend a Science Reception hosted by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC, Governor of Tasmania and Mr Warner at Government House. This reception provided an opportunity for Thomas and Callum to network and discuss current issues and concerns in the Science domain with local Scientists, Professors, current Postgraduate Students, Fellow Students and Teachers.
Young Scientists Visits:
As part of National Science Week, the College hosted four ‘Young Tasmanian Scientists’ from the University of Tasmania. These scientists; Laura, Indika, Angus and Nicole, gave interactive presentations to the Year 5, 6, 8G and 9 students explaining their Science areas of research and pathways to enter Science study at UTAS. The students learnt about krill research in Antarctica, Epidemiology and the spread of diseases, the technology developments in food transport to minimise spoilage during transportation and observed various chemical reactions.
The ‘Young Tasmanian Scientists’ program has been operating since 2003 and has directly reached over 50,000 Tasmanian school students to date and many more members of the Tasmanian community. With a specific focus on outreach to rural and regional communities, the ‘Young Tasmanian Scientists’ builds connections, celebrates student achievement and provides opportunities for community engagement in science.
Rich tasks
Rich tasks are those that enable the student to apply their knowledge to solving open-ended tasks. As part of the Maths Pathway program, our Year 7 and 8 students get the opportunity to regularly engage in rich challenging tasks. All the rich tasks are chosen to enable all students to achieve at their own level, the new term for this is 'high floor, low ceiling' tasks. Year 7 Blue have been working on the task 'Star Polygons ' during class. Students had to join a circle of different numbers of dots to see if they could make a complete star polygon using all the dots and ending at their starting point.
NITA Education
This week, our Kinder, Prep, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 5 students have been working with the NITA educators to learn about the significance of the location in the history of Tasmanian Aboriginal people. This history coincides with the year level HASS curriculum being studied in class in 2019.
