St. Joseph's Cup

Last Fridays our Year 3- 6 students travelled by bus to Sacred Heart Geeveston to celebrate the Feast Day of St Joseph. We began the day with Mass together and then rallied for the inaugural St Joseph's Cup! It was a very close and exciting game, and with great effort and teamwork demonstrated by all, we managed to score the winning goal, to close the game at 2-1!
After a sausage sizzle and some wonderful activities in the Sacred Heart playground we came back to St James filled with appreciation for the great relationship between our schools and the wonderful experience we shared.

NITA Education Dance and Storytelling

On Wednesday the 19th of March we were once again very lucky to have Trish Hodge and Mathius Everett from NITA Education come in to do traditional Aboriginal dance and storytelling.

Year 1 and Year 2 were taught the mutton bird dance. Each class learnt about the dance then practiced performing it with Mathius. Both classes look forward to practising again with Mathius soon!

Year 6 had a session after lunch on traditional storytelling. The class discussed why stories are important and listened to different dream time stories from Trish. They finished off the session with a fun activity. Each student created an animal out of air dry clay, the most popular animal to create was a trimanya, echidna.

We are very proud of our continued connection with Trish and Mathius and look forward to seeing NITA Education in Term 2!

Year 9 and 10 Art and Ceramics class

The visual artists have been learning about how to use a grid to help with scale and placement in drawings as well as learning how to correctly place facial features. They have been working on pencil portraits this term and will be utilising these skills to create painted pictures later in the year. They have done an excellent job with a very difficult area of art.
The ceramicists in this group have been working on making stamps out of clay, creating pinch pots and patterns and textures to go on their pots and some students are moving on to creating animal pinch pots. Most of their work is with Ian Clare at the moment to be fired - so watch this space for updates.

Year 7 Ceramics

Year 7 have also been working on their pinch pots. We have made pinch pots birds this year, which are with Ian Clare for firing. Later we will paint and glaze these so they are complete.  The class is currently in the process of finishing off their animal pinch pots. This is where you decide on an animal and choose certain features to include as appendages on your pot. We are then glazing these pieces in whatever fashion the students see fit.

Year 7 Deep Time History lesson at Randalls Bay Beach

Our Year 7 classes spent the afternoon at Randles Bay Beach with Cultural Knowledge holders Trish and Mathius from NITA Education.  Students have been learning about the deep time history and evidence that has occurred throughout each time period.  The students also explored local bush foods  and flora and fauna that first nations people used in their diets.   It was a lovely afternoon exploring our history with a hands on experience.

Year 7 Camp

Our Year 7 students enjoyed their recent camp at Stewarts Bay, Port Arthur, where they had the opportunity to build upon already established friendships, build new friendships and get to know each other through a range of team building activities and challenges. The weather was perfect and activities were fun, in particular beach volleyball and making sand sculptures. Visiting the Port Arthur Lavender farm was a great way to end the camp.

Pathways

In January, one of our Year 10 students, Charli Corwell, applied for a school based traineeship with Huon Valley Council Children's Services. With the support of her family and St James, Charli was successful in her application for the traineeship which she will undertake over the next three years. This opportunity means that Charli will be able to complete Year 10 and her TCE at college, while gaining her Certificate III in Children's Services. There were smiles all round for Charli's sign-up at Huon Valley Council on Wednesday.
St James also welcomed Zac Mastrocola and Lewis Goss from Build Up Tassie. Zac and Lewis presented a range of apprenticeships opportunities for Year 10 students who are interested in a career in the construction industry. Expressions of Interest are currently open for the next Build Up Tassie Civil Construction program set to kick off on the 5th of May. EOI’s are only open until 24th of March. For further information, please look at the Loretto Community Housing and Build Up Tassie website: https://www.lch.org.au/build-up-tassie/ and check out the Build Up Tassie FaceBook page.
