From the Principal

Dear Members of the St James Catholic College Community,

St James Catholic College shares its Josephite charism with many schools and colleges across Australia and New Zealand. Last week, I attended the annual AJASS Conference in Sydney, AJASS stands for the Association of Josephite Affiliated Secondary Schools. This conference was a great opportunity to learn from other Principals and Leaders who are also working in Josephite schools.

We visited the site of Kincumber where the Sisters of St Joseph have maintained a presence to this day. This site was established by Mary MacKillop and the Sisters as a home for boys in 1887.

As part of the conference, Sr Catherine Mead spoke about the role of Josephite Education. Sr Catherine has worked in a number of Josephite schools in South Australia.

Sr Catherine's research to date indicates that there are 4 key characteristics in Josephite Education:

  • Founding Story
  • Core Set of Values – Strength in Compassion, Dignity, Charity, Justice & Inclusion
  • Symbols and Languages – Use of respectful & inclusive language
  • Service to the Community – Belonging is central

Sr Catherine's research has also identified the following key characteristics of a Josephite approach to Leadership:

  • Faith-inspired Leadership – integration of faith & prayer, humility and compassion.
  • Integrity in Leading Mission – congruency of mission & tradition
  • Leadership as Service and Vocation – Integration of Gospel values, Servant leadership built on the development of strong relationships.
  • Leadership Formation – Capacity building in faith, spirituality & educational leadership.

I personally found this conference inspiring; listening to how these remarkable women, the Sisters of St Joseph, continue to answer God’s call.
