Term 3 Welcome

Welcome back to Term 3. I hope that the holiday period was relaxing and that you were able to spend some quality time together as a family. Joining us this term are a number of new students and their families. Welcome to: Chase, Rosa, Jaidan, Tyler, Catrina and exchange student Margaux who is visiting from France. We welcome you all to our community and hope that your time with us is both productive and rewarding.

St James Feast Day

Last week, the College community gathered to celebrate the Feast of St James - our patron Saint. It was a wonderful occasion with Fr Howard celebrating Mass for us. Every year the College celebrates St James Feast Day by awarding two students (one from Year 5 and one from Year 9) with a Principal’s Award. This award is given to a student, who in all aspects of College life, has demonstrated a commitment to their Faith and Learning, demonstrates a positive and mature attitude, shows their peers and teachers mutual respect, encourages others and is safe in the school environment. These students have tried their best in both academic and non-academic activities and always Let their Light Shine.

Congratulations to Tori Direen in Year 5 and Thomas Reed in Year 9 who are the worthy recipients of the 2018 St James Feast Day Principal Awards.

Mary MacKillop Feast Day

Together with Sacred Catholic School Geeveston, we will be gathering at St James Catholic Church, Cygnet to celebrate the Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop on Wednesday 8 August 2018 at 10:15am. Afterwards the schools will be spending the day together participating in a range of activities and sharing lunch. Good luck to our catering students who are preparing a special lunch for our staff and visitors.

Our College is one of many Colleges founded by the Sisters of St Joseph. Following the Josephite charism is when we acknowledge and try to emulate the devotion and dedication shown by Mary MacKillop to God. At the Penola Centre in South Australia, Mary MacKilllop is depicted with the following attributes:

  • Deep spirituality and trust in God
  • Love of family and regard for friends
  • Sense of social justice and compassion
  • Belief in consensus and cooperation
  • Respect for the dignity of the individual
  • Spirit of independence
  • Charity to all regardless of religion, race or culture.

We continue to aspire to instill these same attributes at our College. Living and leading by the values of inclusiveness, humility and respect for the dignity of others, demands courage and the willingness to respond to the forces which propose a different way of being.

The College Leadership and Advisory Board are currently conducting a review of the College Uniform. Parents should have received a copy of the Uniform Survey this week.

Visit from Australia’s Youth UN Ambassador

St James Catholic College Year 9 and 10 students will have the opportunity to meet with the Australian Youth UN Ambassador on Monday 6 August from 2-3pm.

The role of Australia's Youth Representative for the UN involves travelling around Australia on a Listening Tour, consulting with young people and collecting their views. Upon finishing the initial consultation, Amos will then travel to the United Nations in New York and deliver a speech on behalf of young Australians at the UN General Assembly. Upon his return, the report will be delivered to the Australian Government, and the results relayed back to the communities consulted. This will be a wonderful opportunity for our students let their voices be heard.

Lunchtime in the Library

Lunchtimes are very busy in the library, with many activities on offer for students. Students can read books, play board games, learn to knit, colour in and so much more. Library is open each day at lunch - 1pm-1:35 pm.

Maths and HASS News

Late last term, Year 8 students undertook a cross-curricular project, combining concepts in HASS and Mathematics. Students were given the broad brief of selling a product that was to be sold from a stall. The only other guideline was that they had a window of time of only one lunchtime to set up, undertake business and pack up, ready for class at the end of lunch.

From the very outset, students demonstrated remarkable initiative and ownership, forming into working groups and developing their own ideas. The result was a pop-up extravaganza a la St James style. There was much amazement over profits made through the exchange of goods for cash. Of course, it was not just about the rustle of notes nor the jingle of coins; the students knew that they were taking a chance but that it was a calculated risk which they had all planned and marketed for.

At the close of business, over $400 was collected, with about half of that as profit after expenses were accounted for. The profit is to be donated to Caritas.

A huge congratulations to all students and staff involved for a high energy, highly successful event and for the skills and knowledge picked up along the way.

Guilford Young College's 2018 College Musical!

Venue: Don Bosco Creative Arts Centre, Mill Lane, Glenorchy, Tasmania 7010

Synopsis: Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors is a delectable sci-fi horror musical with an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, and an unquenchable thirst for HUMAN BLOOD. As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s extra-terrestrial origins and his true drive for world-domination.
