Dear Friends of St James Catholic College,
Our students have certainly made the most of the wonderful teaching and learning opportunities during Term 3, and I’m sure, will head into the break with positive reflections of their achievements and efforts in the year so far.
Term breaks are often a great time to reflect on and celebrate student efforts because school life is often so busy and by Term 3, students typically require a little extra stamina. When our core focus on literacy and numeracy programs continues and we have the addition of other activities (like Book Week, Swimming Lessons, Sports Carnivals and Assessment Tasks) our students’ physical and emotional reserves can be challenged. Throw in some particularly cold weather (not to mention the power outages!) and we find that resilience is put to the test!
As adults, we know that resilience is a life skill requiring specific strategies and practice; it helps us ‘bounce back’ after hard times. With resilience, we realise that our efforts to do the ‘tough stuff’ helps us to not only bounce back, but actually spring forward into a new stage of personal growth.
Supporting children to develop and practise resilience skills is really important. Encouraging them to keep trying, supporting them to maintain good sleep habits and nutrition, and helping them to identify the adults, peers and resources available like Kids Helpline all helps. As a school community we are here to support our young people to flourish.
Our school community is what makes St James Catholic College so wonderful. Thank you for your ongoing support of our work, and I also thank our Classroom and Specialist Teachers, Cultural and Learning Needs Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Counsellors, Utilities and Office Staff and all those who contributed to our learning community during Term 3.
It has been a wonderful term and we look forward to seeing all the students, as well as our Principal, Joe Sandric, back on Tuesday, 15th October.

Athletics Carnival
Our students enjoyed the opportunity to have fun, enjoy a bbq lunch and participate in a range of athletic and novelty events at the 2024 SJCC Athletics Carnival held at Huonville yesterday. All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 should be proud of their efforts which included some great individual and year level performances. Many thanks to the staff and parents who assisted on the day and congratulations to all students who actively participated in events, giving 100% for their house team. The winning house team for 2024 and Athletics champions will be announced early in Term 4.
Music Students Shine in End-of-Term Performances
Our high school students certainly shone with some wonderful end of term in class performances. These performances reflected the dedication, creativity, and passion our students brought to their chosen rotation or elective subject. From original compositions to instrumental showcases, each item was a testament to their growth as musicians.
This term, students were also introduced 10 new Djembes—goblet-shaped hand drums originating from West Africa. These beautiful instruments added a rich, rhythmic layer to the music program. Grade 8 students enjoyed playing tribal rhythms on the Djembe, skillfully accompanied by the soothing tones of the American Indian flute. Their performances were a captivating display of variation in dynamics and precision as they followed Pete the conductor.
There were also some other fantastic performances, includng original songs, featuring heartfelt lyrics and melodies that were both composed and performed. On the Djembe, one student provided steady timekeeping during a lively jazz improvisation. His rhythmic control and ability to adapt within the piece demonstrated his mastery of his percussion instrument. https://tinyurl.com/fbm7jhv9
Another student showcased his ability to perform a soulful blues bassline on guitar, while Pete joined him with complementary guitar riffs. Together, they created a rich and immersive blues sound.
Two Year 8 students delivered a beautiful rendition of a popular song. The students harmonies and emotional connection to the song left a lasting impact on all who listened.
A captivating performance of the repeated chord progression from Coldplay's “Clocks” was another shining moment, where the iconic song was brought to life.
Accompanied by Pete on flute one student played the drums, to a soulful blues improvisation. https://tinyurl.com/msfc8ww3
We are incredibly proud of all students for their hard work and creativity this term, and we can’t wait to see what they will continue to achieve in the future.
Footy Day
What a great way to end the term, with students and staff dressed in their favourite sporting team colours. We wish all students a restful holiday break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 4.

Year 3 and 4 Red Ball Tennis Competition
On Tuesday, students from Years 3 and 4 participated in the Red Ball Tennis Competition held at the Cygnet Tennis Club. The students had a fun day playing against students from other schools in the Huon Valley. The wind made for very challenging tennis at times but this didn’t dampen any spirits, with great sportsmanship on display.
We congratulate all three teams for their participation, team spirit, and enthusiasm on the day coming away as runners up in each division. Special mention is to be extended to George Farah and Thomas Bishop for being recipients of the Good Sportsmanship Awards decided by Tennis Tasmania.
Year 5 Mathematics and science
In Year 5, In mathematics and science, we have also been exploring the properties of different shapes and prisms and how they can be harnessed in areas such as structural designs (e.g bridges or houses). We have been lucky enough to utilise the secondary science laboratory and are looking forward to carrying out more experiments within our practical lab times over the coming weeks. We have also been learning to dance using various body movements taken from different genres from the past and then updating them to give them a modern street tone. The students are keen to integrate some of these lessons into their end of year Christmas concert performance so keep an eye for them in the final weeks of school.
Year 6 STCPSAA Congratulations
Congratulations is extended to Charlie Wallace, Jacob Bantick, Ruby Wilcox and Gabrielle Gasparin (Year 6) on representing our College in the STCPSSA Doran versus Webb football and netball carnival last week. The students had a great time, winning both their football and netball games as part of the Doran teams.
