Dear friends of St James Catholic College,
WE’RE ON THE WAY!
St James Catholic College is a vibrant and innovative learning community based on our Catholic faith traditions. We value our local community, excellence in education and the healthy relationships that allow our students to flourish.
Later this year I mark four years of being back at St James Catholic College. Over the course of this term I have had two meetings with senior staff at the Catholic Education around the renewal of my principal contract. Doing so has given me time to reflect on the journey over the four years and I'd like to share with you just briefly, a few reflections on the journey based on our mission statement.
I believe we are a vibrant an innovative learning community when we look to opportunities to consolidate excellent learning and provide other opportunities for our students. I look to the ways over the last four years that we have been able to provide intervention programs for our students in ways that see them engaged with their learning. I also believe we are vibrant as a learning community when we look to opportunities in our secondary school that our students have through their rotations. Of course, there are many other indicators of the learning community that we have but I believe that these two examples highlight how we are, as a group of staff, able to work collaboratively and come up with learning solutions for our students that hit the mark for them.
We have done much over the last four years to strengthen our Catholic faith traditions. Every Friday two classes join with the parish for morning mass, whilst rigour in our religious education curriculum also highlights our commitment to student learning and engagement in our faith. Of course, the values that underpin our school are founded in the gospel, and are the blessings for all in our Catholic school.
Opening the school to the broader community, be it by the little lights program that we run on Fridays or our engagement with the refugee community and its broader support systems within the Cygnet community, highlights to me how we place such value on our local community.
In the end we are an educational community. We strive for excellence in it and I am particularly encouraged by the dedication of our teachers, where their planning and programming and quality scope and sequence documents assist to uphold the rigour in our teaching. I look forward to the future and our rollout of the learning management system that will not only provide even more rigour but will be easily accessible by families, strengthening the partnership that we have in the education of our students.
All of these component parts working together provide an environment in which our students can flourish. I have the gift in the position that I walk around the school either during break times or during class time and see the healthy relationships that see our students playing well together and learning well together. I'm also blessed to see the wonderful adult role models that we have here at the college that provide examples of healthy relationships between us all.
So, as a college we have much to be thankful for in the journey. Of course there is always much more to do. Being strategic and deliberate about what we do as a college is important because it focuses our attention on these core outcomes. You might like to know more about our strategic goals - what we have done so far and what we are still to do. Please take time to look over our strategic plan and see that at the heart of it is your child.
